Interior design in Jensen Beach
Gava Studio Design is an interior design studio based in Stuart, serving Jensen Beach and the neighboring Town of Ocean Breeze. Jensen Beach occupies the northeast corner of Martin County, between U.S. 1 and the Indian River Lagoon, and it is unincorporated, so Martin County reviews building permits here. The community grew from the pineapple plantation Danish immigrant John Laurence Jensen set up after arriving in 1881. By 1895 Jensen was shipping more than a million boxes of pineapples a year, and the fruit is still its emblem.
We meet at the property, at showrooms and stone yards when it is time to choose materials, or by video. Projects here range from houses facing the lagoon to established neighborhoods inland, manufactured and site-built homes in Ocean Breeze, and shops, restaurants and offices in the downtown redevelopment area, where the county's design standards shape what a renovation can look like from the street.
Neighborhoods and communities we serve in and around Jensen Beach:
- Downtown Jensen Beach
- Indian River Drive on the lagoon
- Skyline Drive
- Leilani Heights
- Rio (adjacent)
- Sewall's Point (adjacent)
- Hutchinson Island (adjacent)
Also serving nearby: Ocean Breeze.
Downtown Jensen Beach and its redevelopment code
Downtown Jensen Beach has been one of Martin County's community redevelopment areas since 1999. Its plan, adopted in 2002 and revised in 2009, calls for keeping the casual Jensen Beach atmosphere, with a mix of uses, an active street life and Florida vernacular architecture, and a neighborhood advisory committee of residents and business owners meets at the community center on Jensen Beach Boulevard. Downtown hosts the annual Pineapple Festival, and the community's history shows in buildings such as All Saints Episcopal Church, built in 1898 and the oldest church building in Martin County.
Renovations here follow the Jensen Beach Community Redevelopment Code in the county's land development regulations, along with the CRA's architectural design standards. For restaurants, shops and offices we design interiors, and the signage and branding that face the street, to suit that code, and our 3D renderings help owners and landlords agree on a space before the build-out starts.
Houses along the Indian River Lagoon
Jensen Beach's eastern edge is the Indian River Lagoon, with Indian River Drive along the water and Hutchinson Island across it. Indian RiverSide Park holds the Mansion at Tuckahoe and the 1889 Capt. Henry E. Sewall House, moved there by barge, and the Skyline Drive area includes some of the highest ground in the community, about 70 feet at its peak. Lagoon-front houses face east, so mornings bring full sun and glare off the water, and salt air reaches every surface.
We plan these houses so the main rooms and the primary suite take the view, then manage light with layered shades and glazing choices coordinated with the window contractor. Hardware, fabrics and exterior-facing finishes are selected for salt exposure.
- Main rooms and the primary suite oriented to the lagoon
- Layered shades that tame east light and glare off the water
- Salt-tolerant hardware, fabrics and porch finishes
- Water-tolerant flooring and furniture in ground-level rooms
Ocean Breeze: manufactured and site-built homes on the lagoon
The Town of Ocean Breeze began in 1938 as Harry Hoke's Ocean Breeze Trailer Park. In 1960 its 142 property owners voted to incorporate, and in 2013 the town dropped Park from its name. Bordered by Jensen Beach on three sides and the lagoon on the fourth, it keeps its own comprehensive plan: the mobile home community in Ocean Breeze East stays, planned-unit agreements can bring manufactured, modular or site-built replacement homes, and the town includes the Ocean Breeze Plaza commercial center.
Ocean Breeze issues its own building permits, including dock permits, so work there goes to the town rather than the county. At densities of up to about 16 homes per acre in Ocean Breeze East, every foot counts: we design layouts, built-in storage and furniture scaled to the rooms, with finishes and lighting that make a compact house feel larger and more finished.
Established neighborhoods between the lagoon and U.S. 1
West of the waterfront, Jensen Beach runs to U.S. 1, with North River Shores across the highway and Rio to the south. Neighborhoods such as Leilani Heights hold midsize single-family houses on established streets, and we design anything from a whole-house refresh to a single kitchen or bath. Inside an existing footprint, a new layout, cabinetry, lighting and surfaces can change how a house works without an addition.
Because Jensen Beach is unincorporated, Martin County permits kitchen and bathroom remodels here, and licensed contractors build them. We prepare the drawings, finish schedules and renderings, and our project direction service keeps the design and the contractor's work aligned from demolition to the last fixture.
Local rules and facts last checked September 2026. Confirm with your building department before you plan.
Does Ocean Breeze use Martin County for building permits?
No. The Town of Ocean Breeze runs its own building and permitting process, including dock permits, while the rest of Jensen Beach is permitted by Martin County. Either way a licensed contractor applies; we prepare the design drawings and specifications and handle the coordination with the contractor through project direction.
Are there design rules for renovating a business in downtown Jensen Beach?
Yes. Downtown sits in the Jensen Beach Community Redevelopment Area, governed by its own redevelopment code within Martin County's land development regulations and by the CRA's architectural design standards, and its plan calls for Florida vernacular architecture and an active street life. We design interiors, street-facing signage and branding to fit, and produce renderings for owners, landlords and the county's review.
What do king tides mean for a renovation on the lagoon?
Martin County warns that king tides, expected in several windows from late September through December, can raise water levels and cause coastal flooding in low-lying areas. For lagoon-front houses we favor water-tolerant flooring and finishes in ground-level rooms, keep furniture and electronics off the floor where it matters, and check flood-zone status early, because a large renovation in a flood zone can trigger elevation requirements.
